Another woman ‘jumps’ into Niagara Falls days after mom ‘intentionally’ did the same with her two children
Just over a week after a woman reportedly jumped into Niagara Falls with her two young children, authorities are investigating a second possible incident involving another woman who may have jumped into the iconic waterfall.
The first incident occurred on October 28, when New York State Police received a call around 9 p.m. local time reporting that a woman—later identified as Chianti Means—had gone over the safety barrier at Niagara Falls with her nine-year-old son, Roman Rossman, and five-month-old daughter, Mecca Means. The police immediately began a search for the three, but as of now, their bodies have not been recovered.
Trooper James O’Callaghan, a Public Information Officer with the New York State Police, has described the incident as intentional. However, authorities are still piecing together the details of what led to the tragic event. After reviewing security footage from nearby Luna Park, investigators believe the family entered the water deliberately, suggesting that the mother’s actions were premeditated.
According to police, Roman was the first to enter the water, followed by his baby sister Mecca, and then their mother, Chianti. Police declined to go into further detail about what witnesses saw, but O’Callaghan emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that the situation is “alarming.”
O’Callaghan confirmed that Means had climbed over a four-foot guardrail before entering the water. Meanwhile, both fathers of the children are reportedly cooperating with the authorities during the investigation.
As the search for Means and her children continues, authorities have now reported a second woman missing at Niagara Falls. Witnesses say the unidentified woman may have entered the water near Goat Island, a well-known area near Horseshoe Falls. Police immediately launched an extensive search, which included drone footage, foot patrols in the gorge, and visual searches from various observation points around the falls.
In connection with Means’ case, her cousin Bierra Hamilton spoke out, suggesting that the mother had been struggling with postpartum depression in the days leading up to the tragedy. Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that affects many women after childbirth and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms include feelings of sadness, intense emotional distress, and in some cases, thoughts of self-harm or harming one’s child.
Hamilton explained that Chianti, also known by the name Diamond Scott, had been privately battling the illness. “Postpartum depression is real, and it needs to be taken seriously,” Hamilton said. “Her death wasn’t caused by relationship issues or anything like that. She was silently fighting depression on her own.”
In a post on social media, Hamilton clarified that Chianti’s death was not related to a romantic relationship, refuting any rumors to the contrary. “Diamond Scott did not end her life over a man. Let’s be clear, there’s no evidence of that,” she wrote. “People need to stop spreading lies.”
The tragedy has brought attention to the often-overlooked issue of postpartum depression and the need for greater support for new mothers. While authorities continue their search for the missing family members and investigate the causes of these incidents, Hamilton’s words serve as a poignant reminder of the mental health struggles that many mothers face, especially in the wake of childbirth.
As the investigation unfolds, local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The Niagara Falls Police Department has not yet issued an official statement regarding the second disappearance, but the search efforts remain ongoing.
The heartbreaking series of events at Niagara Falls has left many questioning how such a tragedy could unfold, and it has sparked conversations about mental health and the support systems needed for families facing challenges like postpartum depression. While the search for the missing family continues, it is clear that this story is much more than just a tragic accident—it’s a stark reminder of the emotional toll that mental health struggles can have on individuals and families.
The Niagara Falls Police Department has been contacted for further comment, and authorities are working to provide answers as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the public’s thoughts remain with the families affected by these tragic events.
