Graduation: A Celebration for All
Imagine graduating from college and having Jerry Seinfeld as your commencement speaker. For most Duke graduates, it was an amazing moment. However, some students walked out during his speech. They protested because he is a Jewish comedian, which they found offensive.
Most students, however, cheered for Seinfeld. Many thought walking out was unnecessary and disrespectful. Even if you don’t find him funny, it’s important to respect your college and fellow graduates. Graduation is a celebration for everyone, not just for those who choose to protest, even if they are a larger group.
By walking out, these students not only missed out on their own experience but also disrupted the ceremony for others. Was it worth it just because they didn’t like the speaker? After years of hard work, the least they could do is stay for an hour and help make the ceremony special for everyone.
